The used electric vehicle market has become increasingly attractive, with some models depreciating rapidly. One such example is the Polestar 2, which originally started at nearly $60,000 but can now be found for under $20,000.

In fact, there are over 40 pre-owned Polestar 2s listed in the United States with an asking price under $20,000. The Polestar 2 was launched in 2020 as the company’s first fully electric vehicle, riding on the CMA platform shared with the Volvo XC40 and C40.

It was available in three different configurations: two single motor configurations and a dual motor AWD variant, with battery pack options of 78 and 82 kWh. When new, the Polestar 2 wasn’t exactly a stellar value proposition, especially compared to its primary competition, the Tesla Model 3.

However, with age, the Polestar 2 has become a more attractive option, with average retail sale prices for 4-year-old models ranging from the high teens to low twenties. Through over-the-air updates, Polestar 2s have gained additional features, such as Tesla supercharger compatibility, making them an even more appealing choice.

With some hunting, it’s possible to find Polestar 2s for less than $15,000, as evidenced by the author’s purchase of a 2022 Long Range Dual Motor model for $14,200. Despite being a high-tech electric vehicle, the Polestar 2 has proven to be relatively robust.

The 78kWh CATL manufactured pack in the Long Range Dual Motor example stands out as a particularly durable option.

It’s also worth noting that independent Polestar servicing is relatively easy to find, and many EV independents are willing to work on Polestars. As someone who has purchased a used Polestar 2, the author has found that maintenance costs can be relatively low, with DIY service being a viable option.

Owning a used Polestar 2 can be a refreshing experience, with the lack of anxiety and ease of maintenance being major benefits.

This is a significant reduction from previous fuel costs for many drivers. As the used EV market continues to grow, it’s likely that more people will discover the benefits of owning a Polestar 2, such as the $14,200 electric car that boasts 470 horsepower.

It’s worth considering that the Polestar 2’s value will eventually evaporate, and it will be harvested for parts and crushed into a cube. However, until that day, the author will enjoy driving their Polestar 2.

Many others may find themselves drawn to this attractive and practical vehicle.
