‘Right to Repair’ approved by Maine voters on Question 4

Zainal Abidin, 22/08/202522/08/2025

The “yes” vote leveled the field so local and small-business mechanics could have access to data that would be restricted to dealerships.

MAINE, USA — Maine voters decided “yes” to Question 4, allowing local repair shops and mechanics access to the same data as dealerships.

Maine is the sixth state in the US to approve such a measure, likely indicating the start of a wave of support behind similar initiatives.

Question 4, a citizen initiative, read as follows on the Maine ballot:

Do you want to require vehicle manufacturers to standardize on-board diagnostic systems and provide remote access to those systems and mechanical data to owners and independent repair facilities?

A “yes” vote allows all mechanical information about a vehicle to be made available beyond dealerships regarding things like being able to diagnose and repair vehicles along with regular maintenance issues.

“By voting yes on Question 4, Mainers have now joined Massachusetts in a growing national movement to update automotive Right to Repair laws for the modern age of connected cars,” Tommy Hickey, director of the Maine Automotive Right to Repair Committee, said Tuesday in a statement. “Automakers are trying to monopolize the market on car and truck repairs but

From supercars to superminis – why data can help dealers buy better cars – Car Dealer Magazine

Zainal Abidin, 20/08/2025

We all know that data is very often the key to a successful car retailing operation, but with so many providers of such information present on the market, trying to find the right one isn’t an easy process.

Perhaps the answer is to go with a provider who has first-hand experience. Simon Hunt co-founded Brego in 2019 after wanting to buy smarter cars and not lose thousands of pounds in depreciation.

He admits that after feeling the pain of selling his beloved Jaguar XK and taking a hit on the depreciation, he set out to build a platform that could help people such as him and dealers make better buying decisions.

Advert

‘If I could tell how much a car was going to be worth in the future, then I could buy smarter, make smarter buying decisions and better cars,’ he told Car Dealer Live in the video at the top of the story.

‘I quickly realized that the motor trade was also very interested in having accurate valuations data, so Brego branched out from there.’

The Surrey-based business initially started out by providing data on supercars, based on evidence that such data was harder to come by for dealers. It

Auto Repair Industry Could Benefit from Tax Relief Act

Zainal Abidin, 18/08/2025

The automotive repair industry is poised to receive a substantial boost from the proposed Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024.

This bipartisan initiative, supported by the Automotive Service Association (ASA), aims to alleviate financial strains faced by independent repair shops, grappling with rapid technological advancements and an evolving automotive landscape.

If passed, the legislation, as outlined in a press release from ASA, would address several pressing concerns. It offers a reward from the high costs associated with adopting new technologies such as EVs and ADAS. These adaptations have forced many independent repairers to incur significant debts to upgrade their facilities and equipment. The Tax Relief Act proposes to reclassify the interest paid on these loans as a deductible expense.

Furthermore, the act proposes a 100% bonus depreciation allowance for qualified property acquired between Dec. 31, 2022, and Jan. 1, 2026. This allowance would cover necessary investments like equipment and vehicles.

Additionally, it increases the maximum expense limit for qualifying property, adjusting for inflation in the coming years, providing immediate financial relief while also setting a precedent for sustainable growth in the industry.

A proposed change in the Child Tax Credit would directly impact employees of these

Show-quality MG Metro for sale

Zainal Abidin, 17/08/2025

Few cars have been treated (or subjected) to as many headline changes in their lifespan as the Metro. Of course, it began life as an Austin – famously conceived to replace the original Mini in British Leyland’s portfolio – before MG and then Rover were charged with selling it. The latter transition, immortalized by Alan Partridge (they’ve rebadged it you fool) signified the model’s descent from genuine supermini contender to venerable figure of fun. Suffice it to say, 18 years at the small car coalface had done it no favors by the time it was nicknamed a Rover 100.

Nevertheless, as is often the way with practical, cheap-to-buy cars (precisely the sort that the industry currently struggles to offer) the Metro sells comparatively well, especially to begin with. That the Mini outlived it by three years says a lot about what being genuinely good and innovative and fun does for a car, but between Austin and MG and Rover the Metro found over two million customers. Which is a fairly substantial number even allowing for its prolonged lifespan.

Certainly it was popular enough to spawn several go-faster derivatives. The most famous (and actually fast) was obviously the Clubman version of

Cost counts most for used car buyers

Zainal Abidin, 16/08/2025

Cost is the driving factor for most motorists considering buying a second-hand car, according to a new poll commissioned by the Motor Ombudsman.

It found that 58% of respondents said money mattered more than model or make.

Meanwhile, the research also revealed that buying from retailers was the preferred option with 48% saying it offered more assurance buying from a business rather than a private seller and 43% saying it offered a safety net if something was to go wrong with their car after buying it.

Meanwhile, the overriding majority (46%) of respondents would buy a petrol model, with those in the 55-plus age bracket the most likely to do so (52%), while 26% said a hybrid would be their preferred choice, followed by diesel (17%) and electric (10%).

Bill Fennell, chief ombudsman, said: “Several million used cars change hands each year, and the second hand market, for some consumers, provides a more affordable and accessible proposition. To help steer consumers in the right direction as they embark on their used car buying journey, our handy reference guide has been designed to outline some of the key considerations, from initial research to extended warranties, and to act as a useful

Stellantis-backed electric flying car to launch in 2025

Zainal Abidin, 14/08/2025

Stellantis has increased its share in Californian-based flying car manufacturer Archer Aviation in a bid to get a jump on rivals in the fast-growing electric vertical take-off and landing vehicle (eVOTL) market.

Toyota, Hyundai, SubaruPorsche, Mercedes-Benz, Geely and other car-makers have all invested in eVTOL ventures in recent years as a means to combat traffic congestion in the world’s growing mega-cities.

Now Stellantis, the parent company of brands such as Jeep, Dodge, RAM, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot and Citroen (and already a major partner with Archer), has purchased another 8.3 million shares in the aviation firm, which plans to bring its first eVTOL aircraft to market as early as next year.

The strategic partnership was forged in 2020 and strengthened last year when Stellantis announced plans to become the exclusive contract manufacturer of the Archer Midnight eVTOL, “thereby allowing Archer to strengthen its path to commercialization by helping it avoid hundreds of millions of dollars of spending costs” .

A “high-volume” production facility in the US state of Georgia is expected to be completed later this year, churning out 650 aircraft annually.

“Archer has established itself as a market leader in the electrification of aviation and we
